Artist’s Statement
Like the nature of creation itself, abstract art is the ultimate pure form of expression. Unlike other visual art forms which are anchored in a subjective view of reality, abstraction is the creation of something entirely new and never before imagined.
Through primordial elements of visual language — form, shape, color, line, space, texture, depth and mass — the abstract artist conveys visceral emotions and ideas, acting as a conduit between the viewer and the ultimate Creator through intuition and expression.
In my own work, I am inspired by the divinity of creation, its underlying mathematical patterns and the pureness of color, form, line and shape combined to create harmony, unity and contrast in the formation of untold stories. I primarily work in acrylic, watercolor and pastel, in both small and large format, on paper and on canvas. I also have an interest in collage and the work of taking seemingly disparate parts and assembling them together to create something unexpected and beautiful from neglected and discarded parts.
How art found me.
Born into a family of artists and collectors, I was raised in one of the world’s greatest art cities — Chicago — where art and beauty were everywhere. I have vivid memories of wandering the Art Institute’s extensive Impressionist collection, standing in light-filled Frank Lloyd Wright rooms, and having the unbridled freedom as a child to paint, play and explore.
I would often watch my grandmother who studied at Parsons during the rise of modernism paint. At my grandparents, my sister and I would forgo the basket of toys tucked in her closet in favor of playing with their primitive collection of objects d’art from exotic places, pondering the significance of their curious modern sculpture, and enjoying lunch in their dining room under the trees of my great uncle Robert Ellis’ evocative ‘Springtime in Paris’ masterpiece, a 7 foot tall larger-than-life abstract painting which now takes center stage in my own collection.
Career-wise, art has always been infused in my life in some capacity, but it wasn’t until I was called to take up the brush in 2020 and began the pursuit of reflecting the miracle of life and love of Our Creator in art.
My your home be filled with joy and art that moves you ~
